چکیده

BACKGROUND Restoring carious teeth is one of the major treatment needs of young children. Glass ionomer cement (GIC) systems had become the most important dental restorative and luting materials for use in preschoolers, children and teenagers. Several attempts in developing GIC with antibacterial effects by addition of bactericides, such as chlorhexidine, have been reported. AIM AIM of the study was to evaluate and compare the color and fluoride ion release of conventional and resin-modified GICs in combination with 1.25 and 2.5% chlorhexidine diacetate. MATERIALS AND METHODS The control groups consisted of conventional GIC and resin-modified GIC. The experimental groups consisted of conventional and resin-modified GIC groups, consisting of 1.25 and 2.5% chlorhexidine. A total of six groups were included with each group being allotted 20 specimens for the evaluation of color stability and 10 specimens each were allotted for the evaluation of fluoride release. Color and fluoride release were recorded using spectrophoto-meter and fluoride selective electrode respectively at 24 hours 7 days and 1 month. RESULTS Resin-modified GIC groups showed less color stability and better fluoride release at the end of the study compared to conventional GIC groups. CONCLUSION There was no significant change in color and fluoride release between 1.25 and 2.5% conventional GIC and also between 1.25 and 2.5% resin-modified GIC combined with chlorhexidine diacetate at the end of the study. Conventional GIC showed better color stability and less fluoride release compared to resin-modified GIC. How to cite this article: Prabhakar AR, Pattanshetti K, Sugandhan S. Comparative Evaluation of the Antimicrobial Properties of Glass Ionomer Cements with and without Chlorhexidine Gluconate

BACKGROUND Chlorhexidine gluconate is a widely used antimicrobial agent. Adding chlorhexidine and quaternary ammonium compounds to filling materials, such as composite resins, acrylic resins, and glass ionomer cements increases the antibacterial property of restorative materials. This study includes antibacterial property of glass ionomer restorative cements with chlorhexidine gluconate. AIM ...

Comparison of the Amount of Fluoride Release from Nanofilled Resin Modified Glass Ionomer, Conventional and Resin Modified Glass Ionomer Cements

OBJECTIVE To investigate and compare the amount of fluoride release of conventional, resin modified and nanofilled resin modified glass ionomer cements. MATERIALS AND METHODS Tablets of glass-ionomer cements were immersed in deionized water and incubated at 37°C. After 1, 2, 7, 15 and 30 days, fluoride ion was measured under normal atmospheric conditions by fluoride ion selective electrode. B...

Comparative Evaluation of the Fluoride Recharge Ability of Two Glass Ionomers Obtained from Fluoridated Dentifrice and CPP-ACFP Paste: An In-vitro Study

Introduction: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a restorative material used in pediatric dentistry, which attaches to dental hard tissues and has cariostatic properties due to the ability for fluoride release. The present study aimed to assess the fluoride release and uptake capacity of two GICs in the presence of various fluoride sources. Methods: This in-vitro study was conducted on 120 disks com...

مقایسه آزاد سازی فلوراید از سه نوع گلاس آینومر پس از قرار گیری در محلول NAF2% خنثی و اسیدی

The purpose of this study was to assess the fluoride release of three fluoride- containing materials exposed to fluoride solutions. This study compared the initial fluoride release and release following re-fluoridation (neutral or acidic 2% NaF) of three different filling materials, conventional glass ionomer cement (CG1C), resin- modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC), polyacid- modified compos...

Long-term fluoride release from resin-reinforced orthodontic cements following recharge with fluoride solution.

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that there is no difference in the fluoride release behavior of resin-reinforced glass ionomer cements before or after fluoride recharge. The materials were divided into 5 groups: 2 resin-reinforced glass ionomer cements used for attaching orthodontic bands, that is, group FOB (Fuji Ortho Band) and group MCB (Multi-Cure Glass Ionomer Orthodontic ...
